Just Dance

When we’re at home and looking for something to do that will get us and the kids moving…we just dance!

You may remember that Malaya loves to get moving to Beyonce’s ‘Move Your Body’,

and we all know how Mahal gets down to Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’.

I’m afraid to say that these days the girls are into their boy bands and biebers.

This past Christmas, we received Just Dance 4 (Nintendo Wii edition) as a gift and although the game was intended for Dawn and I, the children have clearly taken a liking to it and if there was one video game I would let them play, it is this one.

The authorities recommend 180 minutes of physical activity per day for children in their younger years and probably don’t recommend that it be done through video games like Just Dance. Active video games like this are no substitute for playing outside but when it’s cold, wet and dark out, you gotta find something to do at home. We find it is a great supplement to all the other activity we do and a lot of fun too.

Even as adults, we find that the game is a great way to get your heart rate up (assuming that you actually dance the dance). Dawn and I find often find ourselves sweating and out of breath when dancing to some of the songs (eg. Tribal Dance, We No Speak Americano, Superstition). Check out this test done by the University of Toronto’s kinesiology centre to determine whether there are health and exercise benefits to playing this game. Keep in mind, the guy in the video has nothing on the kineticfamily girls when it comes to dancing!

Despite all the Bieber, One Direction, Beyonce & Carly Raes the kids listen to, they are still down with the hip hop. When I saw Blackalicious in concert at Richards on Richards nightclub in Vancouver when I was in college, never did I imagine I’d be watching them again in concert 10 years later with my little daughters! Here’s a clip of the Gift of Gab spittin’ some Alphabet Aerobics at the YoGabbaGabba Live! show.

Thanks Yo Gabba Gabba!

Now, go dance!
