The Love Movement

Mahal blowing out birthday candleTwo years ago our second daughter, Mahal, was born and it changed my life forever. Dawn spent (I can’t even remember how many) hours in labour and was a hero in the delivery room. Moms will always have my utmost respect for what they have to go through for us to be here.

The past two years have been a blessing, though it hasn’t been easy, for me as a dad. I’ve certainly had my struggles and moments of frustration with Mahal. The transition from 1 child to 2 was definitely harder for me personally than going from zero to 1. I think it’s also safe to attribute some of the crazy to sleep deprivation. Mahal turned 2 today and I’m in a better place. She is finally sleeping better (hallelujah) and so am I.

Everyday, I make an effort to be a better dad and I imagine it’s something I will always be working towards. I used to worry and struggle with how I would divide my time, attention and love for our two little girls and in her two short years Mahal has helped me to understand that the human capacity to love is not finite. More children doesn’t mean you have to divide your love. Your heart just simply grows bigger. The word mahal in my native tongue (tagalog) translates to the word love in english. I must say that she has been aptly named. Happy 2nd birthday, my love.
