Vancouver Fall Classic Half Marathon 2015 Finisher’s Medal

I recently ran the Vancouver Fall Classic Half Marathon put on by the Vancouver International Marathon Society earlier this month and this is my race review. It’s a Pros and Cons list format based entirely on my personal experience and preferences. Here it goes.

Pros

  • Having the option of a race-day package pick up was nice to have
  • Package pick up was quick and easy
  • You could hang out inside the UBC buildings prior to start of the race and can keep warm instead of waiting outside in the cold
  • Lots of washrooms/toilets
  • Variety of race distances, 5k, 10k, 21.1k to choose from
  • Great atmosphere
  • Plenty of volunteers to help direct you to where you needed to go or answer any questions about the event
  • Free coffee (McDonald’s had a coffee truck giving out regular and specialty coffees)
  • Quiet route
  • Scenic route, in parts
  • Finisher medals
  • RunVan gloves included with registration
  • Water stations and electrolyte drinks along the route
  • Chip-timed
  • Plenty of food and refreshments at the finish including juice, chips, bananas, and other snacks
  • Food voucher for your choice of 2 big slices of pizza, sushi, or chilli from the food court at the UBC Nest after the race
  • Free beer at Mahony and Sons
  • Lots of places to sit inside the Nest
  • Lots of room to warm up outside before the race
  • Race Expo
  • Parking was very close to race start line


Cons

  • Pay parking at UBC, unless you take public transit but there is no Skytrain option so you’re stuck with taking the bus
  • Not much in terms of swag given away in the race package (this could be a pro or con)
  • The gloves we got with our race package are supposed to be touchscreen friendly but I find they don’t work very well with my touchscreen devices

So as you can see, the Pros heavily outweigh the Cons and overall it was a wonderful experience at the Fall Classic. It’s a race that I would definitely consider doing again and would recommend to others. Kudos to the race organizers, volunteers, sponsors, winners, and everyone that participated.

Highlights

  1. This event was held on the same weekend that the terrorist attacks happened in Paris, France so the big Canadian flags that usually wave high and free at UBC were raised at half-mast as a symbol of respect and mourning for the tragedies that had befallen on France. I wouldn’t really say that this was a ‘highlight’ but I am certain that everybody who ran this race had a thought for Paris that day. It makes you realize how lucky we are to be where we are and to have the freedoms that we have. It made me want to run harder for peace.
  2. After the race I had a chance to sit down and have my pizza in the company of John Garratt who finished 2nd place in the Men’s 60-69 age category. We had a nice conversation about our race experiences that day and I was both impressed and inspired by John’s stories of his other running conquests this past year which included qualifying for and running in the Boston Marathon and a few other long distance races including the Whistler 50. I sure hope that I’m still running when I get to be his age. He was definitely an inspiration.
  3. I didn’t have the best race ever or beat any PRs but I was proud to finish. I struggled quite a bit during the first ten kilometers and it wasn’t so much physical as it was mental. I was proud mostly that I was able to silence the self-doubt in my mind that often creeps up to tell me that I can’t do something or that I’m not gonna make it. I love defeating that doubt.

5 Things I Learned from My First Fondo

In September of 2014 I rode in my very first Whistler GranFondo, a 122km bike ride from Vancouver to Whistler, and it was an awesome experience. A Gran Fondo is defined as a big group ride that is usually longer than 100 kilometres or more. Riders of all skill levels and experience can participate and the ride is organized like a race; although it is not meant to be a race there are race elements built into it for more competitive riders. Whether you’re racing or just want the satisfaction of finishing the ride, gran fondos offer a challenging thrill for everyone.

As someone relatively new to road cycling, I learned a lot on the journey to my first gran fondo. Here are five (of many) things I learned from the experience leading up to the big day. Although these are not specifically about the day itself (maybe I’ll save that for another post) these were some valuable lessons learned along the way. If you are thinking about getting into cycling or want to ride in your first fondo too, I hope this provides you with some helpful insight.

1. Get fit. I don’t mean fit in terms of muscularity, endurance, and strength; although that will come with training. I mean ‘fit’ in terms of being properly fitted on your bike. A proper bike fit can help prevent injuries and reduce discomfort associated with a poor bike setup.

Many specialty bike shops offer bike fitting services that can help fine-tune your bike to your size and riding needs. I had a bike fit done with a professionally certified bike fitter and it was a really valuable learning experience. I only wish that I had done it sooner. The session consisted of a thorough analysis of my riding needs, goals, habits, posture, flexibility, equipment, even down to the type of eye-wear I use when I ride. They hooked up sensors to different parts of my body and measured my movements while I rode my bike on a stationary trainer. The sensors were connected to a computer which projected a stickman-like figure of me on a screen analyzing all my numbers – I felt like cyborg! After getting my bike fit, we made some adjustments to my bike’s set-up to give me a more comfortable and efficient ride.

2. No shame in spandex. Wearing the proper gear can make a huge difference to the riding experience. A good pair of padded cycling shorts and a proper fitting cycling jersey with pockets on the back are incredibly practical, especially on long rides. It’s amazing how much you can cram into those little pockets on the back of those tight little jerseys; I remember stuffing pb&j sandwiches, energy bars, a banana, and energy gels with plenty of room to spare.

3.  Cycling is not cheap. The start up costs add up. At first you think that all you need is a bike but think again. Once you get a bike you realize there’s a whole lot more in store. Here are some additional items for consideration.

– helmet (I had an old one but as I learned with child car seats, they have an expiry date)
– clipless pedals
– cycling cleats/shoes
– accessories; bike bump or CO2 cartridges, water bottles, bottle cages, lights, sunglasses, spare tubes, saddle bag, a multi-tool, tire levers, cleaning supplies
– apparel: shorts, jerseys, gloves, vest or jacket (for those rainy day rides)
– bike computer

Now you don’t have to get all these things at once and instead gradually build up to it. So while it’s not cheap to get started, once you have most of the essential gear, you’re pretty much set to hit the road whenever you like. However, after riding for a while and seeing many other bikes on the road, you may be tempted to get a newer, lighter, flashier bike with better components! I’ve often heard amongst other cyclists that the appropriate number of bikes you should own can be boiled down to a simple formula, n+1. With ‘n’ being the number of bikes you already own.

4. Chamois cream is a thing. Once I started going on longer rides, I was thankful this existed. You can apply it to the inside of your shorts or directly to your skin. I always did the latter. Chamois cream improves comfort in the saddle and can help prevent chaffing. TMI.

5. There is a lot beauty to be seen out there and it’s better seen on two wheels. I feel fortunate to live in such a beautiful place but I’m sure wherever you live the beauty is magnified tenfold when you’re on your bike, or maybe it’s just the endorphins talking.

These are all beautiful places in their own unique ways and sure you can also get there by driving or some other mode of transport but the journey of getting there by bike, the things you see along the way, the neighbourhoods you pass, the struggle, and the sense of accomplishment of getting there (and back) is much much more rewarding.

A Special Ride

My bike ride tonight was a little different than usual and included a special message carved out through the city using my GPS bike computer. It’s my beautiful wife’s birthday this week and I dedicated this ride to her. Always so giving, always so supportive, always in my heart. Happy Birthday Dawn!

About the ride: I plotted my route on a paper print out of a map I had with me on the ride but I had my doubts about whether I could actually pull this off given the limited time that I had and whether it would look clear enough to read. The one thing I had going for me was the weather which was absolutely brilliant today in Vancouver. You can see that I turned my GPS on just before crossing the Burrard Street bridge which, in hindsight, I probably should have kept off until I got to Trafalgar and 4th Ave. There were certain points where I got a little disoriented and went a bit off track (just before the Y, the inner part of the B, and the D – A – Y were supposed to be a little bigger but I was starting to run out of time to get to an appointment at Hemlock and Broadway which is about where I stopped my GPS. All in all I thought it worked out well and definitely all worth it!

With its awesome natural beauty, the relatively short flight, and the opportunity to visit family, Whitehorse, Yukon has been a choice summer vacation destination for us time and time again.

Our summer trips are often filled with many wonderful activities and over a series of blog posts we will share our experiences and highlight some of our favourite things to do in the area – perhaps a quasi ‘list of things to do’ for future travelers considering a visit to the land of the midnight sun.

Best Mountain Biking Destination

It’s no secret that Whitehorse, Yukon is an awesome place to mountain bike. With recent features in Impact Magazine, Get Out There, and Outside magazine naming Whitehorse as the Best Biking Destination in its 2013 Outside Travel Awards, the Yukon is becoming highly regarded as a world-class destination for mountain biking enthusiasts. It’s not hard to see why. The abundance of well-maintained trails surrounding the city combined with the extended daylight hours during the summer make for a kick ass getaway where you can get your mountain biking fix pretty much anywhere, anytime of day.

Our most recent trip took us through the trails around Grey Mountain and the Riverdale area which were pretty much right in our backyard. There is plenty of trail variety so it is suitable for different levels of ability, ranging from from easy and very wide cross country trails to more challenging and steeper singletrack. The most exciting trails are the singletrack along the many lakes and along the Yukon river. Many of the trails often led to something or somewhere picturesque and whether you’re biking or hiking you’re bound to see beauty.

If you can BYOB (bring your own bike) then you’ll enjoy the comforts and familiarity of your own machine but if not, there are several local bike shops and companies in town that rent mountain bikes for as little as $35/day (24hrs) or weekly rates are available if you really want to get your fill. We’d recommend Cadence Cycles on Wood street or the Kanoe People (yes, they have bikes too) as our previous rental experience s with them have been outstanding. There is also Icycle Sport which has been a local mainstay in town for years but we have yet to use their services.

On The Road

There were also a few days where I opted to ride on the road rather than the trails. I called the local bike shops in Whitehorse in advance of our trip to see what, if any, rental options there would be for road bikes but it turned out that it wasn’t really an option there so I rented a bicycle travel case from a bike shop in Vancouver before we left and packed my own bike to take with me. Different Bikes in West Vancouver and Speed Theory in Vancouver are a couple of shops that rent travel bags/cases.

The downtown area of Whitehorse is cyclist friendly with dedicated bike lanes on the main roads and traffic is generally light. Once you get out of the city and ride the seemingly endless highways, it gets very pretty. The vast scenery and quiet open road makes you want to ride on forever. A good long ride will most likely be an out and back (return the same way you came) route. The views were outstanding both ways and riding on the highways felt like I had the road all to myself.

There you have it. Ride on in the Yukon.
