Falling Up

November 11, 2011 in Running

Fall LeavesNov.9, 2011. Winter is upon us. It’s colder, it’s wet, the days are shorter, and hockey is back on TV; just a few of the excuses I’ve been coming up with to justify not running. I love running, no doubt. I also love a warm bed, dry socks, coming home early, and my Vancouver Canucks. Contrary to my recent post about running (see Key to Life), I’ve been struggling to get myself out there, even if it’s just for 3-4 km after work or on the weekends. I can’t say that I haven’t had the time; that’s just not true. Yes, I’m tired. Yes, I’ve been busy. I’ve worked a lot of extra hours into the evenings over the past month, which made for some really long days. As a result, running has fallen by the wayside.

The good thing is, I haven’t been completely sedentary since I’ve been using the Iron Gym. Dawn and I have also been doing some quick blast workouts at home, usually after we tuck the kids into bed. But I haven’t ran in a while and I miss it. I need to pick it back up. I think the last time I ran was the Turkey Trot 10K on Thanksgiving; maybe once or twice after that. In any case, it feels like ages ago and I need a jump-start.

We’ve also been extraordinarily busy with a lot of family and social activities lately – Mahal’s 1st Birthday x 2 parties, Malaya’s pre-school field trips, Halloween festivities and dance rehearsals with zombie friends. Where did October go? This coming weekend will be no exception, a Yo Gabba Gabba concert with the kids and Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 (boxing) with my family. My family gets together to watch every Pacquiao bout on pay per view (we don’t let the kids watch, so they happily get to watch Dora in another room).

Any get-together with my family usually involves a buffet of irresistible Filipino soul food (if I may call it that). I didn’t know where I was going with this post but I think I just found the motivation I was looking for. If I’m gonna eat like a champ, I gotta run like a champ.

Nov.10 – As part of my commute today, I ran 4km after work from the office to the train station. The running gods must have read my post and decided to assist me because the weather was spectacular in Vancouver today. I stopped at the apex of the Burrard street bridge deck to capture the scenery on my phone’s camera. I’m so glad I ran.
